Do you remember? 1965 was the year when the Vietnam war continued to worsen and 35,000 marched on Washington in protest of the war. Health warnings on cigarette packs were mandated; the skate board became a favorite toy; skirts got shorter and men’s hair got longer. The doomed Betamax was born; the St. Louis Arch was completed; the Beatles released “Help”. President Lyndon B. Johnson announced his plans for Medicare and the war on poverty; Pope Paul VI became the first Pope to visit the United States; a power blackout in Canada and New York left 30 million people in the dark.
In 1965 the annual inflation rate was 1.59%; at year end the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 969; gas was 31 cents per gallon. The cost of a new house was $13,600; average cost of a new car was $2,650; average annual income was $6,450.
